Chromebook (ChromeOS)

Install Deskkit on a Chromebook

Chromebooks don't run desktop apps on their own, but almost every Chromebook from the last few years has a built-in Linux mode you can switch on. Turn it on once, paste one command, and Deskkit installs like a normal app.

First, a 10-second check. Open Settings and search for "Linux". If you see a "Linux development environment" option, you're good to go. If there's nothing, that Chromebook can't run Linux apps (this happens on some budget or school-managed Chromebooks) and Deskkit won't work on it.
1

Turn on Linux

Open Settings → search "Linux" → next to "Linux development environment", click Turn on and follow the prompts.

It downloads and sets itself up in a few minutes. When it finishes, a black Terminal window opens.

2

Open the Terminal

If the Terminal isn't already open, find Terminal in your launcher (the circle, then search "Terminal") and open it.

3

Paste this one command

Copy the command, paste it into the Terminal (Ctrl+Shift+V), and press Enter. It may ask for your Linux password.

curl -fsSL https://deskkit-site.pages.dev/chromebook/install.sh | bash

This downloads Deskkit, installs what it needs, and adds it to your launcher automatically.

4

Open Deskkit

When it finishes, open your launcher and search "Deskkit" (it lives under Linux apps). The first launch takes a few seconds while it unpacks.
